Thanks to Doug driving all around Hawaii Island, I was able to make it from Hilo to Klawock in much shorter time that last year. The overnight flight from Kona to Seattle was a little bit tortuous on my body. But I still made my Ketchikan and Klawock connections, even with a delay in Kona. Being mostly awake for that amount of time, made for a very sound sleep my first night on the boat. It's a real "turn and burn" schedule. I usually take a float plane into Craig, or a ferry to Hollis. This time, I took a fixed wheel plane (much faster and more smooth) to Klawock. I enjoyed it so much, that I took a bunch of pictures and videos.

I'm already on the job less than 24 hours after getting here. I slept like a rock for 8 hours last night, and we went and got our ice. Shawn accidentally blasted me with the ice hose, which really woke me up. We also got a good shot of ice inside the wheelhouse. He didn't realize that he was doing it, until I started hollering at him. It was pretty funny! We're already headed out to the fishing grounds, so we'll be out of cell range for a few days after about an hour or so from now. The video is of Shawn with the ice hose. He's filling the fish holds, moments before accidentally aiming it into the wheelhouse, and straight at me. The video is of Shawn with the ice hose. It's becoming my practice to hike the Sulphur Banks trail and the Rim Trail around Halema'uma'u on the Summer Solstice. I start out thinking that I'm only going to do part of it, but once I get going, I keep going. It's a good place to meditate and say a few prayers along the way. The Jagger Museum has become considerably more crowded at dusk, due to all the lava activity that happened a couple of months ago. It's probably better to show up there in the wee hours of the morning. As a result of yesterday's walk, I slept for a solid 10 hours last night. I'm really making up for all the lack of sleep from which I suffer during the school year. I also seem to be healing from the medical procedures and bugs that were plaguing me in May. Hawaii Island is indeed "the healing place." I'm resting up and doing minor house chores before heading up to Alaska for the July 1 opener. Itsuro is in the water, and I'm almost finished with final exams at Santa Cruz High. |
